Swimming In Laundry

Thoughts and Observations While Navigating the Laundry Room of Life

Umm…Thank You…(I think)… May 30, 2007

One ambitious family invited over the entire kindergarten class (along with their siblings) for an afternoon of fun. Usually I shy away from these sort of things, but The Pilot agreed to finish painting our staircase if I would just leave the house and take the kids with me! So we applied the sunscreen, loaded up the car and headed toward the HUGE bounce house and water slide.

All but one face was familiar. So I sat down next to her and introduced myself.

Our first conversation went something like this:

Me: How many kids do you have?

Her: 6

Me: Wow! How old are they?

Her: My oldest is about your age and the youngest is 8.

Me: Oh, How old is your oldest?

Her: 23

Me (after a long pause): Add about 10 years.

Her: Oh

End of conversation. Nothing else. La fin.

I was left wondering if 1) I look really young or 2) I sound really immature.

I OWE, I OWE So Off To Work They Go May 27, 2007

“Gampa” always wore a flannel overshirt with a pocket. Every time I help the boys into a shirt with a pocket, they comment on how it is just like “Gampa’s”. This makes us all smile…

I am rendered speechless as pictures are worth a thousand words. This print is made of organic matter and is done by hand.

Are We There Yet? May 11, 2007

The boys were dressed the same (Grandma thinks that’s cute). I think I might have mixed them up as I was loading them into their car seats. Traffic was heavy and I couldn’t get either of them to admit to being Bigweld. They were determined that there were two Herbies in the car! This is a new game they’ve started. I don’t think it’s all that funny.

It’s a long way to Grandma’s house, one vehicle at a time…

Boy on drivers’ side: “Pickup”
Boy on passengers’ side: “Car”

And then, I lost track. I just heard two very similar voices.

“Big Truck”
“SLUG BUG”
“Car”
“Car”
“Dump Truck”
“Back Hoe”
“NO, that a digger”
“Oh”
SLUGBUGSLUGBUG
“Big Truck”
“Little Truck”
“GT6″
“Tractor”
“Hey, that like Gampa’s Tractor”
“Mustang”

Sin Loves Company May 9, 2007

Violet gets into the car. She is very grouchy. I warn her that there are consequences for being disrespectful. She continues to be rude. I start to give the “you’re making some bad choices” speech when she blurts out with: “I wish I hadn’t sinned” (was this a healthy sense of guilt or a cry for absolution or frustration in not being able to play a Curious George computer game?) I then chime in with, “I wish you hadn’t either” (I might have chuckled. Bad Mommy.) …Silence…followed by more silence…Then I hear a rather loud Violet voice blurt out “YOU’VE SINNED TOO” (hmmm…was she pointing out the painfully obvious or was she embarrassed and in need of company on her walk of shame?)

It Depends On Your Definition of "Is" May 8, 2007

Per Violet, Mrs. H (her kindergarten teacher) “knows a lot more than mama”. Recently, one of Violet’s classmates said “heck”. Mrs. H explained that when you say “heck” it is just like saying “hell”. This seems like sound logic to me. It’s the application of the logic that gives me some trouble.

Violet: “I snuck up on Gram” (insert 6 year old girl giggle here) “and I scared the hell out of her” (insert “and I’m very proud of myself” face here).
Me: “Really?”
Violet: “Yup”

Headline: NEW BLOG FOUND May 5, 2007

I just read this new blog. The writter is witty, clever, and cute. She is new to the blogosphere and deserves a nice welcome. So, Wise Readers, check it out, leave a nice comment, and let me know what you think.

Ok, Ok, the new blogger is my youngest sister. I have been teasing her for months about being over 20 years old AND having a myspace account. She has finally set up a beautiful blog. Reading her entries allows me to meet another side of her. I am amazed by her creativity, love for life, and her honesty. It is an honor to call her sister and friend.

Happy Blogging, Sis.
